Modern Times Hotel, Vevey, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

We spent four nights here, using the hotel as a base to explore the region. We even took a train to a nearby town to see the traditional cow descent. Château d’Hauteville train station is an easy three-minute walk away, so getting around was convenient. The rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable, and the restaurant had a fantastic range at breakfast. Hotel Modern Times in Vevey was an excellent stay.

The room felt uncomfortable and unhygienic, and I honestly can’t believe this property carries the Marriott name. As a long-time Marriott Bonvoy member, I expect a certain level of quality, but this hotel fell far short and hurts the brand’s reputation. The room wasn’t properly cleaned: there were visible stains on the bathroom floor, and the sheets had a strong, unpleasant smell that made it hard to sleep. There was no air conditioning and the ventilation was terrible, so we sweated all night. For a hotel in this category, it was shocking not to have a fridge or kettle. Even the hair dryer was filthy, and the replacement was just as bad. From the start, the staff were quite unfriendly and didn’t make us feel welcome.

The hotel was really quiet, a lovely place to unwind. We enjoyed walking to Vevey, which took around 30 minutes. The rooms were very clean, with great mountain views, and modern. Breakfast was great too, with plenty of fruit, vegetables, and local cheeses.

There’s a refill station on every floor with still and sparkling water, which was a thoughtful touch. Our room had an open shower with no door, so that may not suit everyone. Check-in was pleasant even though we arrived late from Montreux, and the staff were still there to welcome us. After the long journey, we appreciated them bringing us an ice bucket when we asked.
