The restaurant was a real highlight. I especially liked the Caesar salad with grilled lettuce, a nice change from the usual hotel version, and the cooking came close to Michelin quality. Breakfast was a smaller spread, but it had what we needed, with excellent coffee and attentive service. Our room was roomy, with clever storage and a comfortable bed. The renovated interior has a designer feel, while the hotel keeps its historic exterior right in the heart of Weinfelden. It was spotless throughout, and the staff were friendly and helpful. There are lifts to every floor, which could suit guests with limited mobility. Parking is behind the hotel and can be tight, but we found a spot even though the place was quite full.

My business tour operator had booked me in for two nights, but when I arrived last Sunday, the hotel was closed. It was dark, there was no taxi available, and calling the hotel only reached an answering machine. I couldn’t understand how a hotel could close on a Sunday in 2023 without offering any way forward. Thankfully, the staff at Restaurant zum Lowen offered me a glass of wine and tried to reach the owner, though they couldn’t get through. They then found another hotel whose owner kindly came from home to give me a room. The people at Zum Lowen and Hotel Thurgauerhof showed real hospitality. Zum Trauben should be ashamed of its service and take a lesson from them.
