Chez Jérôme

The staff were very nice, and Jerome even let us stay several hours past checkout because our flight wasn’t until the evening. We had a great room, comfortable beds, and a tasty breakfast. It’s a 15-minute walk to town, though that was clear when booking, so I didn’t count it against the rating.

The room was simple and clean, and breakfast was basic but filling: fruit, toast, ham and cheese, butter and jam, juice, instant coffee, milk, and hot water. The location worked well for us, close to the crater and ocean, and a 13-minute walk into town. Jérôme was super friendly, and I loved chatting with him and petting his cute dog. I’d already missed her. He was busy with festivals and other things, so his wife was around the hotel a lot. She didn’t like guests staying in the common area, where the Wi-Fi worked reliably. Whenever she saw us there, she questioned us, and her tone was cold and callous. If we explained why we needed to be there, she let us stay. I still had a great experience overall, so no complaints.

The location is ideal if you have a rental car, with free parking. Without a car, town is about a 15-minute walk. Our second-floor room had a balcony facing a small edge of the island where we could watch the sunset, and the AC and heat worked really well. Breakfast was provided, the hot showers stayed hot even when used back to back, and the Wi-Fi was slow but usable. The staff were friendly and helpful to those of us who speak English, and check-in and checkout felt relaxed and easy. Everything was clean and well kept. I’d highly recommend it, especially at this price.

Sorry, Jérôme, but I really missed customer orientation during my stay at Chez Jérôme. Breakfast comes with the room, yet I couldn’t choose what I wanted. When I arrived at noon, 12 identical plates had already been covered in plastic for the next day, each with cheese, ham, salami, and 3 cherries. Who wants breakfast prepared 20 hours in advance and served under plastic? It was only “served” after 8:30, though it was already ready. I don’t understand why I couldn’t just take off the film at 8am. I also asked for checkout at 11am instead of 10am and was told no, because new arrivals were expected at 1pm and they needed 3 hours to clean. I checked several hotel websites and still found rooms available there, so I wondered why a one-hour late checkout wasn’t possible when the place wasn’t full. They offered to keep my luggage in the breakfast hall, but the hotel is so far out of town that there was nowhere to go for that hour. This was my very personal experience. Earlier ratings suggest you worked hard to make guests happy in the past. Maybe it’s time to look at your current policies again.
