Really, really good place.

I stayed during the first two weeks of January 2026, and I'm from Jujuy, Argentina. I'm writing because the negative comments I've seen seem truly unfounded. Hornitos beach is a few kilometers from Mejillones, right in the desert, so it makes sense that they ask for a security deposit and charge extra for things like water and gas. The limited services are also part of why the beach stays clean and environmentally friendly. Think of the apartment as a premium camping trip, not a 5-star resort. The point is to spend long days outside on the beach, away from being cooped up, then enjoy dinners, gatherings, or barbecues in the evening. That means you aren't spending on services during the day. For small families traveling on their own, the apartment is the most affordable choice. The other houses cost enough that you'd need to share the rental with another group. It has lots of practical things for a family beach trip with kids. The barbecue space is roomy and comfortable, and there are bicycles, children's games, plenty of furniture, umbrellas, and beach toys. The rooms and bedding were spotless when we arrived, and the laundry service is very good. Just remember this isn't a hotel, so bring supplies to keep your space clean while you're there. It's still infinitely better than camping at the far end of the beach. The apartment is behind an independent restaurant and bar, the only one on the beachfront. Prices are considerable, but reasonable for the food and cocktails and for being the only place around. The empanadas and sunset drinks are a nice occasional treat. The pool is often closed, apparently for bureaucratic or hygiene reasons, and they could be clearer about that in their advertising. Still, with so much beach to swim at, why would you need a pool? For families or small groups of friends visiting Hornitos, this apartment is the best option.

I arrived for work at midnight, when I had no other options, so I stayed, and they refused to refund me. The bed was dirty, clearly used by someone before and simply made up. The room was uncomfortable, the service was terrible, and there was no electricity. I had to ask and beg just to use my laptop. They wouldn't let me park inside, so I picked a spot nearby for security reasons. The staff member didn't know what services were available, and I had to call the manager about everything. When I asked the manager to help sort things out, he always said, "I can't do anything; I'm in Antofagasta." The shower was a weak trickle and not hot. The toilet had only enough water for one flush, so I had to ask again for the water to be turned on. If I could take stars away, I would.

We went with friends last year, and after reading the reviews, I'm not surprised. The hotel owner is rude and unpleasant, with zero customer service, haha. The owner's son is the same. The bar was closed even though we'd been assured it would be open, and the pool was under maintenance despite being promised for our arrival. They charged us for water and electricity, so we spent the whole weekend worrying about turning off lights 😂🤣🤣. They aren't friendly, and the service doesn't seem focused on guests' experience or well-being. If you're going to Hornito, it's safer to book at the Caja de los Andes Hornito Hotel.
