I spent four nights at Hosteria Pionero. Some staff were lovely and attentive, especially Tamara and Sebastian, but others were less helpful. I won’t be back. The room and bathroom were clean and nicely furnished, and the bed had good sheets and was comfortable. The main problem was the water. In the morning I timed it: 11 minutes at the tap before it got warm, then another three before it was hot. I wouldn’t put up with that again. Wifi was terrible. I could connect in the hallway by the office, but not in my room. At mealtimes I could get online if the receptionist left the “Moto phone” in the dining room. When she left, the signal dropped and I had to log in again. There’s no cell service either. The hotel is a five-minute drive or 15-minute walk from the tiny town of Cerro Castillo. That may be fine with a car, but otherwise it’s inconvenient and hard to access. There are few other places to eat. The upside is that it’s about 45 minutes closer to Torres del Paine than a hotel in Puerto Natales. I paid $255 USD a night, but would put it in the $120 USD range. Maybe that’s why it was between half full and empty during high season.

The room had no charging outlets except one in the bathroom, and the bathroom heater was placed dangerously close to the toilet, where it could burn someone. The water heater was old and took more than 10 minutes to warm up each time. Our toilet wouldn’t flush properly and was clogged by morning. The USD 40 packed lunch was just a dry, tasteless, uncooked sandwich and a protein bar. The hotel charges as if it were inside the park with great views, but our room view was nothing like that. It was extremely hard to find, Google Maps didn’t work properly, and reception hung up on us three times when we called for help. Overpriced, poorly maintained and unsafe, with shockingly unprofessional service. One of the worst hotel stays we’ve had. Avoid it.

The staff were lovely and attentive, but everything felt far too expensive. It was $285 a night, with dinner another $45, and you’re still almost an hour from Torres del Paine park. I found the price hard to justify.

We stayed here after our TDP hike to rest and recover, and it worked out great. The hosts were extremely kind, and the rooms and bathrooms were spacious and comfortable. A great alternative to Airbnbs.

I spent two nights here and met some great people. The rooms were clean and spacious, with a classic ranch feel, and the setting is quaint. The staff are lovely, and even took me out star gazing. It’s a good place to stop on the way to Torres Del Paine or stay for a few days.
