Valparaiso Experience

The house has everything and some large terraces with views of the city and ocean, though the place isn’t in great condition. A coffee grinder was covered in dust, and the housekeeper didn’t seem to be doing a good job. We were shown around by a young woman who arrived late and seemed in a bad mood. She left us with the taxi driver on the road, unsure what to do. The house manager didn’t answer when we called, but the driver was a very kind gentleman who made calls and asked around until he found the house we’d booked. He only left once he knew we were safely inside. The woman handed us the key, said all the information was in the booklet, and left. Our first impression of 234 Sta Margarita and the neighborhood was really bad. The streets and houses looked dirty and poorly maintained. After a day, though, it started to feel okay: it was safe and quiet, and the city view seemed less sad than it had at first. There are a few decent dinner places nearby. Overall it was an okay experience. If I return to Valparaíso, I’d choose another neighborhood, probably Cerro Concepcion, which looks much nicer and has more restaurants and shops. I think the whole experience would be better there.

The balcony view was nice, and there was a washing machine. We paid a good price for a good place, but cleanliness was the biggest letdown. It needed a proper sweep. By chance, I noticed at check-in that the sheets hadn’t been changed, and they only changed them after I asked. The towels looked questionable, and the internet was bad.

There’s a great view of Valparaiso’s port and bay from this spacious apartment on a hill. The big windows and glass patio door let in lots of sunshine. If you’re over 70 like me, though, walking down and back up the 30-degree slope for half a mile to the downtown area every day can be a lot of hard work. Thanks to Bart for the prompt service and helpful advice. The microwave and TV remote weren’t working, but he replaced them quickly the next morning. If you’re from North America, it’s best to ask him how to use the clothes washing machine.

We stayed for two months and found the location great, with exceptional nightlife within walking distance. The home had everything we needed, and the view was extraordinary. Staff were incredibly attentive and available for any questions about the area. We had a great experience and highly recommend it. Worth every penny.
