The staff were friendly and helpful, and our room was clean and had an interesting feel. The hostel also arranged an amazing Great Wall tour for us. It’s a colourful, interesting place, though the shower barely felt like a proper shower. For what you get, I found it a bit expensive compared with other places to stay in China.

The hutong gets lively early, so if you’re a light sleeper, I’d ask for an inner room. Those seem to look onto the courtyard rather than outside, but should be quieter. I stayed five nights and would happily return. The family-run hostel has a lovely atmosphere, and although the building is old, it’s kept immaculate. The staff are super friendly and helpful, and my laundry came back truly clean, not just rinsed through.

I stayed at the courtyard place a little way down the road from reception. It was affordable, up to a high standard, and full of fun people.
