The photos online gave us a very misleading idea of this place. We wanted a cultural stay, but the problem wasn’t that it was old, it was that the basics were dirty and unwelcoming. The Hutong was dark and strewn with rubbish, and our taxi driver struggled to locate the hotel. In December, Beijing is cold, and the heater downstairs wasn’t enough for our small family room. The host told us not to touch it. The main bed was up in a loft, there was no cupboard, and barely enough floor space for luggage. The bedding and bathroom were dirty, with lots of mould, and the shower curtain looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in years. There were no windows, just a skylight over the bed. Our booking included breakfast, but we were told it wasn’t available before 08:30. We had an excursion at 07:00, so we left without it. The reception was dusty and dirty, the host spoke no English, and the receptionist slept on a bed in the reception area. We booked a family room at Beijing Siheju courtyard Hotel, but this was a very disappointing stay.

The staff are really sweet, but the property needs a lot of work. Some bathroom and toilet fittings are coming loose. Avoid the terrace room: its AC is noisy and the door doesn’t lock. I’d only stay here if I couldn’t find another courtyard hotel elsewhere in China.
