Being back in Dalian after 24 years away from Manchuria, I found a reminder here that the city still has a glow from its days as a bright star in Asia. Sun Moon Lake Hotel is right beside the railway station, and while the building is clearly from an older, once high-end era, that history gives it a timeless feel. People who remember when Sony was the “Apple” of the world may appreciate that heritage more than younger travelers. The rooms and other hardware show their age, but the branding, professionalism, and five-star hospitality still feel intact. The warmth and dignity here are hard for trendy, internet-famous boutique hotels to match. Thanks to the night staff member who helped with my check-in, and to Manager Sister Zhang for helping me at check-out. Their kindness made me feel at home.

I was able to check in shortly before 8 a.m. thanks to Agoda's early check-in option. The receptionist knew some basic English, and everyone was kind, which made the stay pleasant. Thank you.

Google Maps sends you on a long roundabout route, but the walk is simple: leave Dalian Station from the side that resembles Ueno Station, turn left along the street with the tram tracks, and it's nearby. You can also take Exit G at Dalian Subway Station. When the receptionist realized the guest was Japanese, they carried on using a Japanese translation website.

Breakfast was excellent, and getting around from here is convenient. The standard rooms are somewhat worn, so they're probably best for travelers who aren't too particular.
