Google Maps somehow showed no restaurants at all in Kikayi Village 🤦‍♂️. This is about the restaurant inside No. 77, Group 1, Xiawalangzhuo Homestay 🍽️. The food is good value for money, better than many places in the county, and the ingredients are fresh. The two owners cook and handle everything themselves. They let us taste their homemade highland-barley wine, which they said had no alcohol, though it tasted strongly like rice wine. Naturally fermented barley wine contains alcohol, but homemade versions usually aren’t strong, around 5-20%, so it didn’t taste too sharp. The restaurant also does breakfast, included with the room. There was unlimited porridge, radish pickles, peanuts, eggs, and steamed buns. The mildly spicy pickles are a little hard to find, so look carefully 🔍. They were crunchy and really tasty, though a friend from Guangdong said they made their mouth go numb 😂. At dinner, other guests told us 30 RMB per person gets four dishes and one soup, but we were charged more and only got four dishes, with no soup. Portions are small too, so two people need three dishes and three people need four to feel full. The braised beef is clearly the signature. It was tender and full of flavor with radish, and the broth was drinkable without being salty, so it didn’t need rice or other carbs. A good option if you don’t eat 🐷. The stir-fried greens come fresh from the owner’s garden and tasted good, though they were a bit too salty. There were two very relaxed, one-month-old kittens in the kitchen, happy to approach people and climb up your pants. Super cute. We also saw their mother cat sunning herself in the morning, looking lazy and unconcerned about her kittens. Places with pets greeting guests get an extra star from me ⭐️. If you’re not in a rush, staying here a few more days would be relaxing.
