Wanfu Hotel (Tianzi Wharf Branch, Beijing Road, Guangzhou)

The rooms were large, the beds comfortable, and the amenities complete. Transport was easy to reach, and check-in and checkout were straightforward. The price was cheap. But I didn't get a good night's sleep the whole stay because of the packing sounds. Most guests seemed to be African tourists staying long-term and buying goods to resell. At night I could hear tape being pulled, things being packed and moved, and lots of thumping. It went on past 1 AM. I messaged the hotel on WeChat, and the noise stopped for 20 minutes, then started again around 3 AM, quieter and for less time. It was incredibly haunting. The location on the app was about 1 km from the actual address. I got off the bus confidently and walked a little, thinking I'd arrived, but there was no hotel. I asked the police and shops, and spent an hour asking around before finding it. No one knew the place because the app used a different name from the actual hotel. I needed help from a Chinese acquaintance to find it. It was on the same pedestrian street, but 1 km from where I'd gotten off, on the opposite side. My legs were aching from all that walking.
