The freshly baked baguette and ciabatta were the highlight of my lunch at Shangri‑La Hangzhou, warm and fragrant. The food was top notch, the venue beautiful, and the ambiance refined. Service was attentive, too. The staff member serving us didn’t speak English well, but he made a genuine effort to communicate and make sure everything was right. That added a personal touch. It was a wonderful lunch in a comfortable setting with quality food and hospitality.

The rooms feel very old, and the air conditioning broke down one night, making a lot of noise. The location opposite West Lake is the one good thing. On weekends, traffic controls in the area can make it hard for taxis to get to the hotel.

The location is great, and West Lake Impressions is a great show on the water nearby. The newer building that was added recently seems much better, though it isn’t clear when booking how to tell the buildings apart. The hotel infrastructure needs significant renovation and upgrades. My room had a leaking sink, the gym was in the hallway, and I couldn’t get a coffee at 16:45. I’m not sure why Shangri-La is doing this to its brand.

The breakfast buffet was splendid, and the staff were okay. I also liked the two cute birds in cages on the first floor. But the rest of my stay was disappointing, and I don’t think I’d ever return. The rooms were incredibly outdated, with old fabric, and the toilet was very bad. They hadn’t provided hand soap, shampoo, conditioner, or bath gel, so we had to call the front desk to send them up. This hotel didn’t meet my expectations for a Shangri-la or its reputation. Honestly, it felt closer to a motel.
