Stanley Oriental Hotel

I’m surprised by the reviews. The hotel is beautiful, and the suite was spacious, clean, well equipped and wonderfully designed. The receptionist was helpful and lovely, even though we arrived late at night. The people of Hong Kong are kind.

I didn’t stay the night. After the long trip to get there, I spent the afternoon, but the room was filthy, there were insects, and the service was minimal. We’d paid extra for a room with a jacuzzi, only to find it broken. I wanted to leave and go home, and when I tried to check out, there wasn’t even a staff member around. They’d gone home. One of the worst hotels I’ve stayed in, and I’ve stayed in plenty.

We had a really relaxing stay in Stanley, right above the restaurants and bars. It was a pleasant surprise, especially after reading all the negative reviews. The front desk service was great, and they even let us check out late. Our room had loads of space, a decent kitchen, two bathrooms with two showers, and a balcony running the length of the windows. The view was lovely, and the big tub had a window overlooking the sea. The bed was comfortable too. There was some dust on the bedside lamps, and parts of the bathroom could have been cleaner. Still, for a boutique hotel, the housekeeping was more than decent.

The room wasn’t what we’d paid for, and when we pointed that out, the receptionist laughed at us. It took more than two hours for the manager to arrive and sort things out. There weren’t any toiletries either. If all you need is a room, this place may do, but the place itself was the least of our problem.
