The bed and linens were top notch, and we slept really well during our three nights. Breakfast each morning had a hybrid buffet and menu setup that we liked, and having a drink on the roof at night at least once is a must. We picked this lovely hotel for the building’s unusual character and history, and were glad we did. The location is convenient for transit stations that connect to the rest of this beautiful city. Our room was great, with thoughtful extras like chocolate, mandarins, and a toiletry box. The staff were outstanding.
Location worked nicely for seeing the Christmas and New Year light displays in Charter Garden. We stayed three nights at The Murray over Christmas 2025, our first time there, and had a memorable visit with very little to complain about. Our N2 room was gorgeous, roomy, elegant, and beautifully furnished. Everything felt new, sleek, and clean, and housekeeping was top class. We slept exceptionally well, especially with the memory foam pillows, and the shower pressure was very strong. Breakfast at The Murray had a great range and quality, and we could order main courses from the menu. The breakfast team were friendly too. Beata was kind and welcoming at both check-in and check-out.
The building’s story is part of what makes The Murray stand out. Architect Ron Phillips was working for the Hong Kong government when he was asked to design an office tower for civil servants. The result was modest but clever: double-height arches at ground level add quiet elegance, and recessed, offset windows protect the interior from the intense sun. That eco-friendly approach was forward-thinking, and the deep windows give the facade a distinctive look. The former government tower is now a luxury boutique hotel designed by Foster + Partners. You can see the building for yourself from rooftop restaurant and bar Popinjays, even if you’re not staying there. The Murray also offers a prime downtown location with easy access to major attractions. The interiors feel refined, service is exceptional, and the dining and amenities are outstanding. The rooftop bar is a highlight, with wide skyline views in a stylish setting. Staff are gracious and attentive. It’s a memorable luxury stay for anyone looking for that level of experience.
There isn’t much to do right around the hotel apart from the peak view tram, though taxis were easy to get and some cool spots were only a five-minute drive away. The rooms were beautifully designed and had amazing views. Staff were lovely, and the little chocolates and local fruit were a nice touch. I liked seeing some more sustainable choices too, like toothpaste in metal tubes instead of plastic, and toothpaste kept separate from the toothbrushes so brushes don’t get wasted just for the paste. The bath came with salts, and the soaps felt luxurious.
The gym is somewhat small for a hotel of this calibre. It’s fine for a basic workout, but may feel limited at peak times. Even so, The Murray brings heritage character and modern luxury together well, and offers a standout experience for adults and children in the heart of Hong Kong. I stayed in an N2 room, which had generous space and a proper work area, making it suitable for business or leisure. The minibar was fully stocked, a welcome convenience that’s becoming rare. The bathroom had a large soaking tub, quality amenities, and a heated toilet seat like you find in premium hotels in Japan. Families may appreciate the special amenities kit for children. The hotel occupies a beautifully repurposed former Hong Kong government office. Its striking facade and distinctive windows give it a mix of history and modern elegance. Inside, the high ceilings, polished finishes, and thoughtful design set a refined tone that fits its status as one of the city’s top and most expensive luxury hotels.
