Hakkas Guesthouse

Since the fire, the community has pulled together, and nearly all the fire doors are now in good condition and kept shut. Hakkas is the exception: in inspections about once a week since 2024, it has had a zero percent compliance rate. This guesthouse repeatedly breaks fire code. In the deadly fire that swept through the lower floors of the building in April 2024, five people died. Two died from smoke inhalation on the fire escape stairs, which the reviewer says was caused by “hostels” such as Hakkas propping open the fire doors. The guesthouse is dirty, and sheets are hung out to dry on the rat-infested fire escape stairs, as shown in the photos. I’m posting this because some influencers have recently shared hotels in New Lucky House using filters that make them look decent. These are obviously paid promotions. Residents and locals know what these places are really like, and people staying there are almost always shocked by what they find. The Hong Kong government repeatedly “reminds” owners to follow the law but doesn’t enforce it properly, putting tourists’ lives at risk.

We had windows, and although the hotel is in the city center, the room was really quiet once we closed them. The room was small, but you know what to expect at this price. Great location, helpful staff and good value for money. Highly recommend!

The area was the one thing that worked for me. I picked this place because it’s right by the Jordan B2 or B1 exit, and the A22 airport bus stops across the street for Hong Kong International Airport. I arrived by taxi, though, and the driver yelled at me to hurry because it couldn’t park there on that busy road. I stayed almost 10 days, extending after the first week. The room was already very dirty when I checked in, and I’m pretty sure nobody cleaned it afterward. There were big brown bugs almost everywhere, as in the photos, and I took many more. The door didn’t close all the way, so I guess they came in from outside. I was very uncomfortable, but I’d paid in advance and there weren’t many other options in the area. I wouldn’t stay there again. I couldn’t sleep with those insects around, and buying bug spray and sanitizer didn’t help. The staff lady doesn’t speak English, so I didn’t even try to explain the problem. It was freezing, especially in the last 3-4 days before I left as Hong Kong got colder. There was no heater, and even though I expected no window, there was a fake window gap, shown in the photo, where cold air blew in. It was impossible to sit on the bed comfortably because of the wind and cold. Mornings were always so loud, from 7am even. Workers were repairing something right by my door, yelling and shouting, apparently unaware that tourists might be sleeping. That was a huge disappointment. I don’t know who else was talking, but loud conversations kept waking me or interrupting my sleep. The shower water also turned cold very quickly, so I had to wash fast even after turning on the water heater. The small sink only had icy water, never warm or hot.

The rooms were very clean, and the metro is super close. The staff were really friendly and helped me after an Airbnb left me stranded. The price was a bit high, but it was Lunar New Year and most places were sold out, so I was glad they could fit me in at short notice.
