Shanghai Hostel Hong Kong

The room was awful, so we left for another hotel within 15 minutes of getting the key. It was dirty and mouldy, smelled bad, and didn't even have a toilet seat. Tiles were coming away from the walls, the sockets looked like a fire hazard, and there was mould on the blanket, bathroom, aircon and ceiling. The location is central, though, with the train station nearby and the museums, harbour, Avenue of Stars and Star Ferry all within walking distance. Also, the person running this hostel runs Taj Super Delux in the same building in Hong Kong, so I'd strongly suggest checking that place's reviews too.

The building made us feel unsafe. People kept staring at us, and after one guy watched us throughout the elevator ride, he said, “see you soon.” The location is great, but I wouldn't want to return there feeling unsafe. My friend booked through Booking, but her card was declined. She emailed to hold the reservation and came three days before to pay in advance. When we got there, we had to call for someone to come to reception. He arrived, then aggressively told us to leave the reception, saying he hadn't invited us in. We went out and asked him to speak to us properly. He got angry and said “girls like us work for him,” gesturing that he was above us and we were on the ground. My friend asked him to cancel the reservation, but he didn't, so she had to call Booking and explain what had happened while we were trying to pay. I don't know whether it was sexism or something else, but don't book here.

I've stayed at more than 50 places in the past two years, and this was easily my worst experience. The room was disgusting, especially the shower, and the Wi-Fi didn't work. I've stayed in four places in Hong Kong, so I know small rooms are normal, but this one was terrible. When I asked the owner about the Wi-Fi, he basically said it wouldn't work and I should buy a data SIM. He wouldn't help, and the promised service wasn't there. The woman working there tried her best, but wasn't good either. Things were bad even before check-in. The owner emailed rules that differed from what I agreed to, changing the Booking check-in time from 3 pm to 6 pm. I politely asked about check-in and whether I could store my luggage, and he was aggressive. When I arrived with a friend who was helping with my bags, the owner demanded my friend leave the whole building because I'd booked a single room. I explained he was just a friend from Hong Kong who didn't need a hostel 😂. The owner also demanded a deposit, which is fairly normal, but his attitude was aggressive and unpleasant. I couldn't wait to leave. Do not book here.

The photos and the actual place are very different. The rooms are dirty and lots of things don't work, and the owner and staff are rude. I had a long wait to check in. When the owner arrived, he wouldn't let me in and even kicked me out. He asked for a 200 HKD deposit and a 70 HKD fee. When I said I wanted to discuss it with my brother for a while, he kicked us out. The air conditioner was broken, and when I asked him to check it, he accused me of breaking it. A very bad experience. Don't book here or your vacation will be ruined.
