The gym is huge and well equipped, and the staff at the desk and around the hotel were generally polite. It’s close to the metro, and they can provide extras like different pillows, a humidifier, and ice. The decor and furniture feel dated, though, and the windows weren’t clean. I also missed having coin-operated laundry.

The pool incident was the worst part for us. I’m the only guardian of my 3-year-old son, but a female safety guard stopped me from taking him to the toilet and said he had to use the men’s toilet alone. He’s a toddler who can’t understand the local language, and the floors were wet and slippery. That felt inconsiderate and dangerous, with no real concern for his safety. The room was also old and poorly kept. The carpet was worn and torn in places, and the dirty, scratched window spoiled what might have been a nice view. Through the grimy glass, the city just looked hazy and smoky. This wasn’t the stay we expected, and I wouldn’t recommend it to families or anyone wanting a clean, safe, comfortable place.

For sightseeing, the location worked really well. The metro is right beside the hotel, with just a few stops to the Confucius temple area and the lake. Deji Plaza is across the street, with a grocery store and plenty of restaurants. Be sure to book in the newer Asia Pacific Tower and ask for a non-smoking room. Our one problem was the air conditioning, which didn’t work properly and was never fixed.
