The photos don’t reflect how the place looks now. It was a real disaster, a scary place. I’d stayed here about three years earlier for a week, and even then it was barely a three-star hotel. Back then the rooms were dark, small, and neglected, breakfast was poor, and staff didn’t speak English, though otherwise it was acceptable. I needed somewhere in this area this year. After reading some enthusiastic reviews, I wondered if I’d been too demanding or if they’d made changes, and booked a room. That was a big mistake. It’s a ruin, hard to imagine until you see it. This time I chose a larger room. The walls on the way there were dirty and damaged, and the room was worse. The door was dirty too, the carpet stained, the wardrobe was missing a door, and the walls are difficult to describe. You can look at the photos. The towels were clean and replaced daily, and two fresh bottles of water and cosmetics were delivered each day. But the room was too dark even with all the lights on. The AC was erratic, always too cold or too hot, and the displayed temperature didn’t match reality. The beds were comfortable and made daily, but I didn’t see a vacuum cleaner there during the whole week I spent at the Asset Hotel. Think about that. Breakfast was mostly Chinese-style, but I ate toast with peanut butter and marmalade. They also had scrambled and boiled eggs. The breakfast room was steamy and smelled weird, like a mix of steam and mold on the walls. I was shocked by how the dishes were washed. It had nothing to do with hygiene. The hotel staff don’t speak English, avoid greeting guests, and never say good morning. The Wi-Fi, when it worked, had zero speed. The TV menu was only in Chinese, and the hotel phone was out of service. In my opinion, the Asset Hotel should be removed from any civilized booking system until it’s fully renovated. There’s no such thing as “good for the price”; dirt is never good at any price.

It’s tucked away among several apartment buildings and hotels, and you have to walk about 50 metres to the main road to get a taxi. The room was okay, but it needed a thorough clean, especially the bathroom. There are lots of stairs, and the only helper at the hotel is the receptionist, who barely understands English. My experience tells me to choose a hotel near the subway for getting around the city. Subway fares are very cheap, and the coaches are spacious.

This is my favorite place to stay in Shanghai. The rooms are clean, the staff are helpful, and it’s well located with easy subway access. Breakfast is basic compared with many other Chinese hotels, but I still enjoy it a lot. I always love their scrambled eggs :-P

The quiet room and easy city access made this a lovely place to stay. The subway is just two blocks away, and there are good places to eat across the street. Breakfast was a nice Chinese spread. I was there for more than a week, and English was spoken by almost nobody, around 99% of people. I'd stay again.

The staff were helpful, and the nearby street has plenty of small, inexpensive restaurants with really good food. The rooms we had, though, smelled musty and showed bad water damage on the walls. From those rooms, the hotel seems due for renovation.
