It's a small budget hotel in the "Japanese" area, close to "bar street" but a long way from the subway. The staff were very helpful, and the rooms were clean but small. It was very quiet from 23:00 to 05:00. Breakfast was surprisingly okay, and asking for something like an omelet was no problem.

There were no major problems. The counter staff can call a taxi and answer questions in English or Chinese. I couldn't work out how to connect to the Wi-Fi in my room, though. It seems like they could just give you the guest name and room number, so minus one point. The area is nice, with local restaurants and food stalls, and there's a riverside walking path just across the road.

I booked the Holiday Inn Express specifically for the Shanghai Masters because I wanted to be close to the stadium. It took a lot of thought before I finally chose it. Friends in Shanghai said the hotel was quite old, but the interior looked renovated in the latest Holiday Inn Express style, and my stay was good. The location is quite far away, and the tennis venue is even farther, so there's not much to say about that. The room was spacious enough, with the sink by the entrance and a decent bathroom. Holiday Inn Express bedding is always a strong point, and the pillows were very comfortable. Breakfast had a huge selection, highly recommended. I think it was even better than at some Holiday Inn hotels.
