The lobby’s ambient scent is quite soothing, and the subway station is just a short walk away. Rooms are okay, though the bathrooms are on the small side. I found the design dated and a bit gaudy. At the same price, there are better options in the city with newer facilities.

A visit back to Shanghai after leaving in its earlier days would feel like traveling through time. The changes in the value of the US dollar and the cost of living reflect how far the city has risen in global commerce. Nostalgia for the past makes sense, but living in or visiting Shanghai now calls for a new level of engagement and adaptability. The city’s growth over recent decades mirrors China’s wider urban shift. Fields and modest buildings in the 1970s and 1980s have given way to skyscrapers and busy commercial centers, as an agrarian society became an urban industrial powerhouse. The change from the Qianhe QianheHotel to the San WantShenwang Hotel, though not well-documented, points to the redevelopment that reshaped the region.
