Waiting Hotel (Shanghai Zhongshan Park Subway Station)

Small hotel, and the room was small too, but it was quiet and clean. Getting around and shopping were easy.

The room was so cramped that I couldn't fully open a full-size suitcase, and two people would have to be careful with the space. There was just one outlet beside the bed, plus one in the bathroom. The TV had no free channels, only paid internet viewing. There was no fridge either, which would be a problem in hot weather if you wanted cold drinks or needed to keep food chilled. At night, the plumbing made an extremely loud crashing noise whenever water ran or the toilet flushed, like metal hitting metal. The toilet also flushed by itself constantly, even when I was washing up or just walking past, and sometimes while we were already in bed. It was bizarre, and anyone who sleeps lightly would likely be disturbed. We were moved to another room after a different issue? No, there was no room move; we stayed in this room. The bathroom had a faint sewer smell the whole time, though it never became overpowering. We booked close to the travel date during peak season, after the hotel we wanted had gone well over budget. This place still had rooms at a price I could manage. From outside it looks like an older, classic building, while the lobby and rooms inside seemed fairly average, neither especially old nor modern. The room was clean, but not spotless, with stains and worn patches in a few places. Our window was right beside the emergency stairs, so close that someone sitting there could have looked into the room or reached toward the bed. Nobody used the stairs while we were there, but it still didn't feel very secure. Some front desk staff couldn't communicate in English at all. We don't expect fluent English everywhere, but this was difficult. The hotel is quite far from the main attractions and big shopping malls, too far to walk comfortably, so you'll need DiDi, buses, or other transport for sightseeing. There are some local restaurants and convenience stores nearby, as well as Chairman Mao’s former residence, which is worth a visit.

There isn't a subway station close by, and sound carries easily between rooms. The main plus is being near a few attractions and department stores in Xuhui District.

The cleanliness is what I'd recommend.
