Shantou Overseas Chinese Hotel

There are plenty of restaurants nearby, plus a large Bu Lian Feng supermarket. The room was spacious and clean, and the service was very good. Rates were low, and it had what I needed, so I felt it was worth staying there. I was disappointed there wasn’t a refrigerator, and the air conditioning wasn’t very cold. Luckily the weather was cool, so opening the windows kept things comfortable. I stayed from April 11th to July 11th last week. My elders used to stay here when they came to Shantou, and I’d stayed with them before. I remember a morning market and traditional food stalls close by, which was handy. The hotel has since been renovated.

Changing rooms made a big difference. My first one faced the street, and the windows barely blocked the traffic noise, even on the ninth floor. In that room, the shower indicator was backward, H meant cold and C hot, and the motion sensor light by the entrance coat rack kept turning on by itself. The next room was a much better experience, though it had the same quirks: despite the 2019 renovation, there were no USB charging ports, and the sink tap was so close to the basin wall that using it was awkward. The rooms are large, the facilities are new, and the toiletries are good quality. The Overseas Chinese Hotel can be quite nice, but its online ratings are low. I think it depends heavily on which room you get, the right one is great and the wrong one is awful.
