The location is perfect, and I slept well despite the rock-hard bed. But the room had no air conditioning, just warm air, which was awful for me as a menopausal woman. There’s also no privacy if you’re not staying with a partner: the bathroom and toilet have darkened glass walls that are still see-through. They didn’t provide sugar or milk for coffee either.

The room had a strange smell, and this is an old place that could use some updating. There wasn’t much to do nearby unless you’re willing to walk a lot or go far. One bed had a bloodstain, and when we called to have the sheets changed, the woman took a while to come, probably because she was on her phone the whole time.

There are shops and food courts nearby, so the location is convenient.

The restaurant took a second try. We were disappointed on the first night, but dinner was perfect on each of the next three nights. For three courses and two soft drinks, we paid under 30 Australian dollars, which is unheard of for a hotel restaurant. I’m writing this from my hotel in bejing, where their buffet is about $80 AUD per person and looks much worse. The hotel is older, and there’s no English-speaking staff, but everyone tried hard to help and really showed it. People went above and beyond, and no one tried to overcharge us or sell us junk, even though we were clueless tourists. It may not meet Western four-star standards, but we loved the experience. Google Translate worked perfectly with a reliable VPN or a translator app allowed through the firewall, and we had no misunderstandings.

I loved the room and found it really comfortable, and the breakfast was the best among the four hotels I stayed in during my trip through Changsha and Zhang Jia Jie. There was lots of variety. But near the window, by the stage, it was dusty, with some black stuff growing there. It made me feel disgusted, especially while I was eating my cup noodles. Still, the breakfast was great, keep it up!
