The room was okay, but the shower wouldn’t close, so water got everywhere outside it. The room door was broken and wouldn’t lock with the key from outside. When we asked about it, he said he couldn’t do anything. Thank goodness we could lock it from inside. The booking process was extremely complicated, with too many messages and instructions. They said someone would be there to help with our luggage when we arrived, but nobody showed up. We waited outside the hotel for an hour for a response and even called. Service was very unfriendly and unhelpful. I wouldn’t book it again or recommend it.

They were so kind and helpful, and the service was incredible. The situation couldn’t have worked out better for me.

The location was a big part of why I felt good about staying here. Hostal La Guakamaya is on Manga Island, near restaurants, a fortified area that feels like a small castle, and a boardwalk with rooftop bars and restaurants. It took about 10 minutes by car to get to Getsemaní, taxis were affordable for the short trip to the walled city, and San Felipe Castle is close too. The hostel has no parking, but street parking was fine for my car. There’s a 24-hour security building across the street, and a private lot halfway down the block that charged around 10,000 to 20,000 COP per day. That lot is run separately, so prices can change and you need a separate agreement. Parking isn't part of the stay, though it’s an option if you want to be completely sure your vehicle is secure. Inside, the shared space has a dining area and a 50-inch TV. The kitchen has a double fridge, labeled baskets for each room's cold items, a dishwasher, dishes, cutlery, and a microwave. On March 30 the gas stove wasn't working, possibly because of safety concerns about leaks that could hurt guests. I rated the amenities 9/10. We traveled with our 3-month-old, and having what we needed for the baby was a huge plus. We could sterilize bottles in the microwave with a special Dr. Brown's bottle sterilizing bag. I felt comfortable and safe with my family. The room was very clean and everything worked: air conditioning, ceiling fan, TV, two bedside tables with outlets, and a small desk. The TV was a good size for the room, though I didn't use it. The bathroom was in excellent condition. My only small suggestion is to replace the mattress eventually, since it has a slight dip. I gave the room 9/10. Entry is by a coded lock, with the code supplied at booking, and you use that same code to get your room key. I was very comfortable overall and would choose Hostal La Guakamaya again on visits to Cartagena de Indias. In my opinion, hotels in the walled city cost more and can be in somewhat more worn condition. The hostel is just steps from the shopping centers and walled city. I had a wonderful time with my family. Sorry this is long, but I think these details matter when traveling. My overall rating was 10/10.

The rooms are cozy, and there are lots of shops close by. It felt just like the pictures, and the independent service gave the place a homey feel. Don Rafa and the cleaning staff were attentive and quick to help or offer recommendations. One thing for guests to know: if you need to arrive early and leave your luggage, try to tell them ahead of time so someone can help. We hadn't, and ended up waiting outside. Otherwise, such a nice place and very helpful people. Thanks!

We'd definitely come back. The place was clean and tidy, and the area felt very quiet and safe.
