The plankton trip was lovely, though the stars over that completely dark bay were what really stayed with me. We also took the snorkelling tour and saw more unusual fish farther out, including a juvenile yellowtail damselfish, blue with bright blue dots. Right outside our bungalow there was already loads to see underwater, so we snorkelled for almost an hour after breakfast and again in the afternoon. We booked a Deluxe Bungalow for three nights at the start of a month-long holiday, and it was just right for switching off. The bed was comfortable, the sea view was beautiful, and showering outdoors in our own bungalow felt special. I brought a book and never even opened it. I was happy just watching the water, iguanas, birds, and the occasional fishing boat. The sea shows all seven colors, though no photo really captures it. We skipped the painting, karaoke, movie nights, and cooking workshops, but it was nice that they were available. The staff were so friendly, from the restaurant welcome in the morning and the person who brought our luggage to the bar team in the evening. We especially appreciated being invited to watch the Junior game with the off-duty staff in their canteen. It was the Barranquilla team's Colombian Cup final, and a great experience.
Our room was tidy and really nice, and the daily cleaning was good. Some of the interior looked dated, though, and the water would sometimes stop working for 10-30 minutes. The boat back to Cartagena with Rutas de Mar was frightening. The wind at the island was around 23 km/h, with waves about 3 to 4 metres high. The boat had to go slowly, dropping into the troughs every few seconds. Water came over the bow and drenched everyone, and it was hard to breathe during those waves. Each time the boat climbed and crashed down again, the impact hurt our backs and necks, with loud bangs underneath. People were terrified, children screamed, one woman got seasick, and a mother yelled at the crew for putting her family in danger. There was no warning or explanation beforehand, even though the crew had just made the trip to the island and knew what it was like. I can't recommend leaving when it's windy. Hotel service was disappointing too. Old dishes were left on our balcony when we arrived, and staff still hadn't cleared them after we asked twice. I gave clothes to the laundry and got back a T-shirt that wasn't mine. We placed room service orders on WhatsApp but got no reply saying they weren't available. I only found out by going to the bar myself. The food wasn't good, mostly just okay or worse, and there was nothing to look forward to. Breakfast cost 60.000 and there isn't really another option on the island. Some staff were very friendly and involved, especially Emma.
The people here changed how we felt about Colombia. We were hesitant before travelling there, but after arriving in Cartagena and then going to isla mucura, we found incredible places and especially welcoming people at this hotel. If you want an authentic local stay, I'd say visit. The rooms feel very traditional but still have the comforts you need. We ate at both restaurants and were pleasantly surprised by the adult options, as well as the burgers and pasta for the kids. It felt like the hotel had thought of everything. Thanks to the team for an unforgettable holiday.
We had a lovely stay, and the beach was calm and the water clear. There was plenty of wildlife too, including a monkey. The staff were fantastic from the welcome onwards, and the food and drinks were really good. We especially enjoyed the afternoon and evening activities: the cooking class, cocktail making, movie night, bingo, and karaoke. We could happily have kept going longer. There were a couple of room problems. In the first one, flushing the toilet made water bubble up through the shower drain. Staff moved us to another room the next night, but the first had curtains for privacy and the new one had neither blinds nor curtains. We told them, then stayed there for the last two nights. Everything else made up for it. After getting married, this was a wonderfully relaxing place. When booking, I would have liked the choice of breakfast included or an all-inclusive meal package with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Thank you, Hotel Isla Múcura team.
We just got back from our second visit to Isla Mucura, and somehow it gets better each time. This trip we tried the new local dishes, checked out the kids center, used the new gym, and picked up some lovely souvenirs at the New boutique. Thanks for making us feel like family.
