The sewage smell in the bathroom was awful, and I should have listened to the Booking.com reviews mentioning it. There was hair all over the bed and mosquitoes everywhere. I can accept a budget stay, but I’ve been in cheaper places that were much cleaner. We lasted three hours before leaving, and I really don’t understand the 4.7 rating. Maybe people feel bad or expect very little cleanliness. I also found the area around the hostel sketchy. People struggling with drug use were using and buying drugs around the corner, and some approached us asking for money while police stood by watching. Santa Marta itself felt overrated to me: the whole city stinks, and there’s nothing to do.
