Hostal Caminos de Suesca

Felipe was incredibly helpful and flexible, even offering me a good price to rent the climbing gear I was missing. The hostel is right by the climbing entrance, which makes it a great spot for climbers. Had a really good stay at Caminos de Suesca. I'd recommend it without hesitation.

If you're after somewhere social, this probably won't be it. There are only a few rooms and it felt deserted. The facilities are very basic, the showers are lukewarm, and communication could be better. Room door locks can be forced open with very little effort, so bear that in mind if security matters a lot to you. The place feels like an afterthought, and the hangboard is a little terrifying. The upside is the location: it's the cheapest lodging right by the crags, next to a convenience store that sells pastries and the climbing shop. Great, cheap food is only a 20-minute walk away. If all you need is a mattress, a roof, and some privacy, this works well.

We expected to stay for a week and wound up here for more than a month. Felipe is warm and sincere, and I repeatedly saw him take time to help travelers plan the next leg of their journeys in Colombia. He's a climber's climber, knows his stuff, and is a safe guide for a climbing course. He also speaks English and Spanish, and if you're learning Spanish, he talks slowly and clearly. He's a natural teacher, and I felt my language skills improve a lot during our stay. The hostel is as close as you can get to the climbing sectors. I'd recommend Felipe if you want to take a course.

The Suesca rocks are only about five minutes away on foot, so this cozy little hostel is ideal for climbers. Felipe, the owner, climbs too and leads courses, guided climbs, and trips around Colombia. He's as friendly as he is enthusiastic. Highly recommended.
