Hotel Alajuela

The courtyard garden is a cool, shady place to enjoy the hotel's tasty breakfast. Our spacious en-suite room was comfortable and quiet. The staff were helpful, especially Farlen, who gave us local recommendations. It's an oasis amid a busy area, right in central Alajuela, about a ten-minute taxi ride from the airport that cost $8.

We arrived late after passing through San Jose, and the staff made us feel welcome right away. The clean, well-kept room had a comfortable bed, and breakfast on the fountain patio was delicious in a really peaceful setting. The owner also helped us find a rental car that was delivered to the hotel the same day, and shared useful travel tips. We were treated so well that we've already booked another night for our return. A great welcome to Costa Rica.

The owner was lovely, a friendly fellow American, and helped make this feel like a warm, peaceful place for a solo female traveler. The room had three beds and felt spacious and inviting, with a very comfortable bed. The walls are a little thin, though, so light sleepers may notice noise. I'm vegan and found the light breakfast of gallo pinto and fruit satisfying. I stayed here for a night before going to Puerto Viejo. The ride from SJO by Uber was quick and affordable, about $4 USD. The hotel is small and charming, with earthy decor and a peaceful courtyard. Staff were kind and attentive, and the clear directions they emailed before I arrived were helpful. My room also had a useful guide to nearby restaurants and things to do. It's a great place to rest before or after a flight, or for a short visit to the Alajuela and San José areas. I'd happily stay again.

The hotel is small, comfortable, clean, and quaint, about ten minutes from the airport. Staff were great at communicating and accommodating us, and breakfast was filling and delightful. The neighborhood has a lively mix of families, shops, a couple of public squares, and restaurants, which was lovely to experience for a day or two.
