We only stayed briefly at Pura Vida Hotel, arriving after midnight, but Berni and Nee greeted us so warmly and check-in was quick and easy. Our Rainforest room was comfortable, and we got a good rest after a long travel day. Breakfast was amazing, with fresh local fruit, juice, and wonderful service. We had a little time before our next flight to look around the lovely property. The hosts were amazing, and we highly recommend the hotel for a visit to San Jose.

Berni and Nhi made this place special. They’re warm, attentive, and generous with advice for exploring Costa Rica. Berni knows so much about local plants and wildlife, and Nhi’s cooking was outstanding. We loved both dinner and breakfast. The individual guest houses are charming, spotless, and very comfortable, set among lush tropical gardens and peaceful paths. Pura Vida Hotel is a little oasis in Alajuela. Highly recommend!

A lovely fresh breakfast, and they made a vegan version for us. The garden is beautiful, full of plants and wildlife, and you feel surrounded by nature. It’s easy to reach from the airport, with a big Auto Mercado supermarket a short drive away and plenty of vegan groceries. The rooms are simple. As far as I remember, the beds had spring mattresses where you can feel every movement, so keep that in mind if you’re a light sleeper sharing a bed. Still, it’s a cool place for your first night in Costa Rica, with super kind, friendly staff.

Whenever we fly into San Jose, this will be our landing spot. It’s stunning to find such a beautiful garden in the heart of the city, and the owners may be the kindest people in Costa Rica.
