Villa Pacandé

It was an okay hostel for a single night. The basic room did the job for a short stop, though there wasn’t anything special about it. I wouldn’t pick it for a longer stay.

The staff were very nice and accommodating, and I did get to enjoy the pool. I was only there for one night before an early flight, though, and it was a Friday. Motorcycles all over the nearby streets, along with barking dogs, kept me from getting much sleep.

A health concern changed our plans, so we canceled one room. Villa Pacandé gave us a full refund with kindness, which put a smile on my face. That was the best part of our stay. On New Year's Eve I stayed in a spacious deluxe room in Alajuela's green, gentle surroundings. The kitchenette had plenty of cookware and spices, plus a coffee maker and clean, roomy fridge. There was a poolside view, an indoor table and couch, and a ceiling fan. The screened bathroom window kept insects out while letting in a breeze. The shower had warm water and a detachable head, and the towels were fresh and the toilet gleamed. I couldn't see the grounding wire, and figuring out the light switches took some patience. I cooked a meal and ate outside under the sky, with friendly dogs and cats wandering by. The garden was lush and peaceful, and there were bus stops and stores nearby. It was a tranquil, comfortable place despite a few minor flaws.

We could pick up and return our rental car right on the property, which made things easy. The owner and staff were friendly and helpful, and they also offer airport transport. This quiet B and B is close to the airport, so it worked perfectly at both ends of our Costa Rica trip. Dinner and evening cocktails were delicious, and breakfast in the morning was free.
