I spent almost three weeks at Perla Negra and would happily come back. The whole place felt tidy and peaceful, with rooms kept clean and looked after regularly. Breakfast was fresh and delicious, with a good range of choices each day. Everyone on staff was warm and ready to help, and the reception team made us feel welcome from day one with their kindness, helpfulness, and smiles. I’d gladly recommend it to anyone wanting a comfortable, relaxing stay in Costa Rica.

The accommodation is lovely, right across the road from the beautiful private beach Playa Negra. Staff are always friendly and glad to suggest good places to eat nearby or things to do and experience.

One of my biggest disappointments while travelling through Costa Rica. I’d made it clear before booking that I wanted an ocean-facing room, but none was available for me when I arrived. Apparently solo travellers weren’t given those rooms, and I ended up in a casita behind the property. Breakfast was good, but dinner availability was hit or miss, depending on whether the cooks felt like working. At breakfast, the owner asked what I did for work. When I told him, he said, “you can’t do anything for me,” then got up and walked away.

The owners were friendly and helpful, and took care of everything I needed. Perla Negra Beachfront Hotel is just a few steps from the sea on Playa Negra, near Puerto Viejo. The beach feels peaceful and natural, with a real Caribbean atmosphere.
