The drive in was a little rough with all the construction, and I hope they sort out the road soon. But once we arrived, it was hard to fault the place. We had a private pool, though the shared area was lovely too. I spent some time there working on my computer and watching TV, and the ice machine made it easy to refill my bottle every day. There were monkeys in the trees each morning, plus iguanas. The room was refreshed daily and always felt clean. With good AC, hot showers, and a Bluetooth speaker, staying in was entertaining enough. The best part was Brandon, who felt more like a host than an employee. He helped my fiancé arrange a private candlelit dinner on the beach with tiki torches, and it was so romantic. My fiancé proposed during our stay, which made those moments even more special. The whole stay was perfect.

The view was beautiful, and the renovated room had a comfortable bed with a mosquito net. Still, I wouldn’t recommend this hotel based on our stay. Breakfast had just three options, and two felt plain and repetitive. The minibar held only one bottle of water, and there wasn’t a welcome drink or other beverage available. There’s no restaurant, despite the great grill setup on site. Housekeeping also wasn’t daily, though the listing said it would be, and we wound up with ants at night. On our departure day they forgot breakfast altogether, and all we got was a quick “sorry.” One practical thing to know: the road up is quite steep, so I’d suggest a 4x4. I couldn’t find that mentioned in the Booking description.

Brandon was the best part of the place. He really does his best to help with whatever he can and make guests happy. But this isn’t a hotel anymore, it’s more like a self-catering house for rent, with no restaurant or bar. Construction is happening in three spots below. The reception shuts at 6 pm, and the entrance gate closes at 10 pm. Breakfast is small, with three choices. There are no mosquito nets, and some areas have no windows, so insects get inside. The road up is steep and damaged too.

The road up was a bit iffy, but everything else about our second honeymoon stop in June was fantastic. Our room at Casa Chameleon Malpais was gorgeous, with a lovely view, and it was cleaned well every day. The staff were warm and took care of what we needed, including making sure our pre-booked excursions ran on time. Andy, Keyner, Brandon, Nicole and Esteban made our stay amazing. The food was great and the drinks were delicious. I especially loved the typical breakfast with turialba cheese, and after trying coco-loco on an excursion and getting obsessed with it, I was thrilled they made it for me again. We also had a really lovely romantic dinner. We’ll definitely be back!

The location is a little awkward, but the forest and ocean view make it worth it. The hotel and rooms are beautiful. Just a heads-up, Apple map sent me to the wrong place, so use Google Maps to get there.
