El Chilamate

I stayed in hibiscus house and loved the spacious kitchen and comfortable mattresses. It's very quiet apart from the occasional howler monkey, and Plaja Neagra is close by. Waking up to that sound makes a TV feel unnecessary.

I loved sitting in the porch kitchen and listening to the rain and nature. The place feels so open and relaxing, and the hosts were lovely. Their pets made being away from my own pets a little easier while I was dealing with heartbreak. The neighbors' kittens kept me company overnight too, though they made quite a racket late at night, and I hope they didn't bother anyone. The walk into town is short, and going along the beach is nicer. A bike gets you there faster, and I'd suggest renting one for your whole stay since there's so much to see. This was my second visit to Costa Rica, and I had the best shower of any place I've stayed here. I also saw no cockroaches at all, despite another guest's comment, just a couple of ants and a little lizard outside on a tree.

We had a very nice stay in the Ibiscus suite at Chilamate Holiday House. It was clean and comfortable, the staff were helpful, and the location is close to the black sand beach and a few small convenience stores. The internet went out for several hours one day because the provider was down, which wasn't El Chilimate’s fault and was only a minor hassle. Sleeping was difficult without AC and with only moderate airflow. The front door had no screen, so we couldn't make use of the breeze. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

The apartments are nicely decorated and the wifi is very good. They're on a quiet street among the trees. The main room furniture, especially the chairs and sofas, is uncomfortable. Don't rent the bikes here, they're in terrible condition.
