The hillside location is outstanding, with a view of the volcano and part of the lake below. The patio was lovely too, with swings, a hammock chair, and tables made from shipping pallets. The owner was warm and very helpful. She made us a great breakfast and helped us decide where to go, including the hot springs, volcano, and ziplining. If we return to the area, we’ll definitely stay with her again.

El Castillo is quiet and relaxing, away from busy la fortuna, and the volcano view from the front is epic. Fanny was a wonderful host, and the rooms were clean, comfortable, and very quiet. Her Gallo pinto was the best we had in Costa Rica. We tried it everywhere, but no one else’s breakfast matched hers. I’d come back.

We had to leave this hotel yesterday, 02.19.2025. Water was dripping from the ceiling onto the bed, there was no hot water because a cable had been cut, and the bedding and pillows were dirty. The staff were terrible, and a woman tried to double the price on the spot. When we reported the leak through Booking.com, the owner’s response was more or less 🤭. A tragedy. Staying here was the biggest mistake we could have made.

Such a lovely spot, with an incredible view, and the hostess is the sweetest. Her neighbor rents automatic motorcycles that are really fun to ride. She didn’t make me gallo pinto, so I guess I missed out. I’ll ask next time.

The owners were welcoming, friendly, and very accommodating. Breakfast was really good, and they were very helpful. They speak English very well. I’d definitely recommend it.
