Toku House

The pool and setting could make this a lovely place, but it was a letdown for what we paid. It needs a proper renovation and a thorough clean, with many of the furnishings replaced. Adding mosquito nets and air conditioning in the living room would help too. As it is now, the price is far too high for the condition and cleanliness. It's a real shame. The location just outside Fortuna was a plus, but the container sits close to a road, with plenty of local traffic even at night. The neighbor's dogs barked day and night, and mosquitoes made it hard to air the place out in the mornings and evenings because there were no screens. Sunlight heated the container up, and the bedroom air conditioner took a long time to cool it down. When we arrived, the place looked like it had barely been cleaned. There was moldy coffee in the permanent filter, and the cutlery, dishes, and glasses were greasy and dirty, so we washed them before using them. The bathroom mirror was smeared, the faucet and shower head were badly scaled, and the shower wall had mold. The photos don't reflect the current state: the shower screen was coming out of its frame, some blind slats were torn off, parts were loose, and many furnishings and chairs were rusty. The grill was completely rusted too. The roller gate was so hard to open that I scratched my watch trying; after I oiled it myself, it opened without trouble. With no fence and a large hole beside the gate, people could get onto the property even when the main gate was closed. The neighbor's dog came through the hole several times a day, and we kept having to shoo it away. The kitchen was basic, with a tiny coffee maker and no toaster. Booking, communication with the owner, and getting the key from the neighbor all went smoothly. This is Costa Rica, of course, not Europe, but at a price comparable to European rates, I expected the condition to be at least somewhat adequate.

The cottage felt so cozy and homelike, and the outdoor space was lovely, with a pool and a pergola with a barbecue. We had an amazing stay. Highly recommend!
