The wildlife was everywhere around the beautiful grounds, thanks to the secluded setting. We saw jewel-colored macaws, agoutis, coatis, and plenty more. There are guides for land and sea outings, including bird-watching, dolphin trips, and night tours. The ones we took were very gentle. There’s a pool and spa treatments too, though we didn’t try either. The tiki bar is lovely to look at, and its discerning bartender has put together a broad drinks menu. There’s happy hour before dinner. Our cabin had a gorgeous ocean view, a big porch with several places to lounge, and a private plunge pool that was perfect in the mid-afternoon heat. The hotel’s location is stunning, with hills and lush forest behind it and the Pacific just metres from the main buildings, so there’s a good view from everywhere. The interiors feel elegant but comfortable, with contemporary touches alongside vibrant local and indigenous art. Lunch and dinner are ordered à la carte, and the menus rotate, so over three or four days you get different choices each day. There are some European-inspired dishes, and everything was good, but the local and seafood plates were among the best food I’ve ever had: ceviche, the catch of the day, and perfectly grilled tuna caught that day. I’ll remember the stay for a long time and hope I can return. This hotel has ruined other hotels for me, maybe forever. Everything from arriving by boat to reluctantly leaving was delightful.

Absolute paradise. The food was incredible, with so many choices for vegetarians. The staff were so welcoming and lovely that the place really felt like home. Edwin and Mark were outstanding. It was very hard to leave. Pura vida!!!

The people at Playa Cativo made this trip. Everyone was so warm, thoughtful, and ready to help with whatever we asked. We’ve stayed in plenty of places around the world, and haven’t met a team like this one. The setting feels untouched and wonderfully remote, with wildlife, water, and scenery that reminded us of Jurassic Park. Our room was beautiful, and those views were breathtaking. Meals were world class, made with produce grown on the property, and the menu changed each time. We kept busy with hiking, birdwatching, kayaking, and yoga. Kayaking through the mangroves with a knowledgeable guide was a highlight, as was a sunset boat ride where we saw dozens of dolphins. A truly magical place for a special occasion. We can’t recommend it enough.

We came for several days to get away from it all, and the nighttime sounds of the forest were a real highlight. From our suite, the huge screens let in the sea breeze, and we fell asleep to all the chirping and cooing outside. The lodge is only reachable by boat, tucked into hilly rainforest, yet it still has beautiful, luxurious rooms. There was plenty to do, though spending a day with a book was just as appealing. We started one day with yoga on the outdoor platform and ended another with a 90-minute Thai massage. Hiking, swimming, and surfing were available too. The staff were welcoming, attentive, and professional. They remembered our names, allergies, and drink preferences, and often anticipated what we wanted. Every meal was fresh, tasty, and beautifully presented. I got a little carried away and ordered several desserts each night. The culinary team really delivers to a high standard. Bring Tevas for beach walks and waterfall treks. They’re cute in a hippy-chic way and practical. And book several days, ideally a week.
