There was nobody on staff and no sign or notice on Google to say the hotel and restaurant were closed. Some people seemed to be living on the property and keeping the grounds up, but the businesses weren't operating. We entered through an open gate, which shut behind us, and got stuck inside until we shouted for help and someone let us out. The whole thing felt weird and creepy, especially at what looks like a gorgeous property. They should at least mark it closed on Google so other people don't end up locked in there too.

Corozalito is a tiny place with a beach, a small store, and one restaurant that we never saw open. From the hotel, it's only a five-minute walk to Corozalito beach, which was usually half empty. Watch out for the rip current if you swim in the ocean. The hotel has a pool by the restaurant, and the 14-room complex felt like a little haven in the middle of nowhere. The clean, well-designed entrance made us forget the five-hour drive. The hotel is about five hours from the Central Valley. The road is good until the last 40 km, where it leads to Hojancha. After that, things change. The roads are small and rough, and don't seem to have changed much over time. Past the turnoff for Carrillo or Punta Islita, they get rougher still. The zigzag route crosses the Ora river, then continues for another 10 km to Punta Islita. Take your time on the final stretch to the hotel, both for the winding road and the amazing ocean views from the cliffs. The rooms come in three sizes and are comfortable and nicely designed, with air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a safe, hot water, and a king bed. Ours was a superior room with two single beds pushed together, and I didn't like the gap between the mattresses. Even though you're up in the mountains, the staff are there to help with whatever you need. We found the restaurant's menu balanced, and the food tasted great and was presented really well at every meal. The drive is worth considering if you want to disconnect without giving up modern comforts. Give Palma de Oro a try, you won't regret it. See you around, and keep traveling.

I love it here. In early November, it's remote and right by a beach that feels very private. The road isn't in the best shape, so bring a 4x4. For me, the place is worth the extra car rental cost.

The margaritas are killer, and the location is peaceful. Great food too, and the staff were fabulous!
