I was back after 4 years, and the place was just as wonderful. We booked late at 8pm and got there 15 mins later. After a long drive and hours stuck in construction traffic, sitting under the Cabana’s covered patio with a Pilsen felt like jungle heaven. The host even offered to cook us dinner. Rain, frogs, toads, owls, and all the other forest sounds helped wash away the memory of the traffic.

We camped at Cabañas Canas Castilla, a peaceful, beautiful spot surrounded by nature. Everything was clean and well organized, and the facilities were top notch. Agi and Guido are lovely, helpful owners, and you can see the time, care, passion, and work they’ve put into the place. Don’t miss breakfast, it’s delicious, with homemade bread and yoghurt. Thanks for such a lovely stay!

The property is in a beautiful riverside setting, with lovely tropical trees and plants and three hiking trails. I did two of them and saw magnificent scenery, great birds and other wildlife, including spider monkeys on a hike and a troop of howler monkeys around the cabins and restaurant. It’s a wonderful place near the Nicaragua – Costa Rica border crossing. I stayed two nights and loved it. Rooms were comfortable and clean, the shower had hot water, and the service was tremendous. I ate breakfast once and dinner twice at the on-site restaurant. Highly recommended, and I can’t wait to return.

We stayed on Nov 6, 2024 and were the only guests there, so Aggie the owner gave us her full attention. She’s a fantastic lady who still loves showing visitors the local plants and wildlife. The dogs are big and a little intimidating at first, as others have said, but they’re gentle teddy bears. They followed us on our hikes and lay on the patio to “protect us.” They’re beautiful and well trained. Our room was clean and very comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were both great value and good quality, with fresh squeezed orange juice and homemade bread at breakfast. We hiked the river trail and farm trail and saw an alligator, an iguana, and many kinds of birds. We’d HIGHLY recommend this place. Traveling to Costa Rica in the rainy season meant fewer people were around, which was one advantage.

The owners were incredibly kind, and dinner was a highlight: family style pizza fresh from the wood fired oven, plentiful and delicious, with a fun chance to talk with other travelers. Camping cost only $10, and they gave bicycle tourers a discount. It’s a great mix of rustic camping and thoughtful touches. Set in the jungle with a nearby river and animals all around, including sloths, horses, and monkeys, it’s quiet because it sits just far enough off the highway, but still close enough to avoid a major detour. They really nailed it.
