Cafe Playa Negra

The people here are what make the place special. Jamile helped us sort out breakfast, answered questions, and patiently encouraged our very basic Spanish. Nixon was warm and funny, set up a mangrove kayak trip with a knowledgeable guide, and showed us his Costa Rica in a way that made us feel included. Steven brought good energy behind the bar, made cocktails to suit us, and was great to talk with. Carolina made mornings peaceful and brought a last-minute breakfast to our room without hesitation. The whole staff was kind and helpful, from local food and activity suggestions to transport advice. They remembered our names and never made anything feel rushed. We came back for a second visit after I first stayed here alone and felt safe and looked after. This time I brought my fiancé, and we loved the calm setting again. Hotel Café Playa Negra is tucked away among nature and close to the local community, with a few cafes and restaurants nearby. The beach is about a 10-minute walk, though the path has little street lighting, so a phone flashlight helps at night. Tamarindo and its busier beaches and nightlife are around a 40-minute taxi ride away, which suited us well. The room was spacious and spotless, with easy-to-control AC and fans. The shower pressure was sublime, and the staff also made our very early checkout easy. The food was excellent, especially the fresh ceviche and calamari. A few details could be better: some loose boards around the pool and patio could trip someone, the garden chairs could be cleared of debris more often, and it would be nice to have towels outside. A little more checking in on people relaxing in the garden, perhaps to see if they want a drink, would help too. Still, our stay was full of joy and we’re grateful to the staff. We’ll definitely be back.

The food was outstanding, and Steven made us feel like family while mixing some seriously good cocktails. We came back several times during our trip just for his specialties. Had a fabulous time here.

Playa Negra felt like paradise, and we’re already planning to return. The rooms were clean and pleasant, the team was great, and the food was good. At the bar, the bartender made tasty drinks and was up for a nice chat. Reception also gave us really helpful tips for excursions. Thanks to everyone.

My father and brother were staying at Cafe Playa Negra and persuaded us to join them after we had a disappointing stay at the Marriott. Its condition and food were poor, and the price didn’t feel justified. A great dinner at the on-site Peruvian restaurant convinced us to make the switch. We were very happy with the clean, good-value rooms, the excellent food, the breakfast, and the relaxed boutique hotel feel. I’d planned a nice trip for my wife and two daughters, and this turned out to be the better fit. We’ll stay here again.
