Hotel Maritza

Doña Ana, the owner, is very nice, and the place is close to everything. For the price, it was a perfect stay. I'd come back.

It's a family-run place with a great location, and they made me feel very welcome. The staff were lovely, friendly, and always willing to help with questions about the area. Since my shuttle wasn't leaving until the afternoon, they were flexible about delaying the room cleaning. They also came to get me when the bus arrived early and made sure I caught it. I felt safe leaving all my things in the room.

It's easy to walk from here to the shops, beaches, and restaurants since Puerto Viejo is small. The central courtyard is nicely laid out, and there are hammocks and seats facing it. My room was clean when I arrived, a decent size, and had air conditioning and hot water. The beds were a little creaky and spongy, not very comfortable, but okay for a few nights. There's a kitchen, a free water refill station, and laundry at reception for 2,000 colones per kg. They didn't clean the room during my three-night stay, only at checkout, which seemed odd. They're also working on a small pool.

The Wi-Fi was my one big frustration. It took three trips to the front desk and six hours to get it sorted, and it was a signal problem, not user error. Otherwise I loved the place. My little room had two beds and was perfect for my great uncle and me. Everything worked well, and I got the sense they'd be quick to help if anything went wrong. There's coffee and some food in the morning, though I didn't eat, and as a big coffee drinker I noticed it. The hotel is right by the bus terminal, which made catching a bus back to San Jose easy. The gate locks at 7pm, which felt reassuring, and the ground-floor rooms have hammocks.
