We had a good time here thanks to the other guests, who were lovely, but the volunteers often seemed uninterested and were hard to find. It was also difficult to tell who was volunteering, since most had no badge or T-shirt and were just relaxing. We asked to book a bus, then when we went to pay, they weren't sure we'd be on it because payment was due before 6 pm. None of the volunteers had told us that. I cut my finger on a shower lock that was rusty and very sharp. It was bleeding, so I asked a volunteer for a plaster. He checked the first aid box, found none, and seemed unconcerned and not apologetic. Those locks need replacing. I think volunteers should be paid to give them an incentive to put in more effort, or the hostel should hire paid staff.

My friends and I stayed a couple of days and it felt a bit like home. Everyone working there was super friendly and made us feel welcome. Roots Family Hostel has a really chill vibe, great dorms with individual fans and mosquito nets, which you definitely need, plus a very nice kitchen and common area. Highly recommend it if you're coming to Puerto Viejo!

The room was the one downside for us. We booked a single room for four nights, and it was functional but small and noisy, with thin walls that let in a lot of sound from the common areas. For the price and everything else at the hostel, though, that was a minor issue. Roots Family Hostel is right in the heart of Puerto Viejo, a great base for exploring town and the area. The staff were incredibly friendly and gave us helpful tips on things to see and do. You can rent a bike right at the hostel for $7 a day, which I highly recommend for seeing the beautiful beaches and vibrant culture. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking too. Great atmosphere, and I'd highly recommend staying here.

We stayed for a week and it felt like a little family. The hostel is a nice size, social if you want to meet other travelers, but never too crowded. The common spaces were always clean, and the friendly staff helped us with everything and made us feel welcome. It's close enough to town and the beach to walk, but not so close that it's loud.

The central location was great, and it felt social without being a party place. Volunteers were super nice, and the beds were comfy, with spacious locker curtains and bug nets at each bunk. The common areas felt a bit cramped, the bathrooms smelled, and there were lots of mosquitoes, so bring bug spray.
