La Ruka is easy to reach on foot from both Cocles and Puerto Viejo town, and I liked renting a bike to explore farther. There are also local buses, tuk tuks, and Uber. Reception was helpful with transport and could book shuttles to places like Bocas de Toro and La Fortuna. I went back after my first visit, stayed as long as I could, then returned again two months later. The shared dorms felt comfortable, with bedside lights, privacy curtains, lockers, fans or AC, and bathrooms cleaned daily. The kitchen, dining space, smoke shack, pool table, gym, yoga shala, and reception all had what I needed. It’s quiet from 10pm-7am, so it isn’t a party hostel, which suited me well. I made wonderful friends there, and the travelers I met felt open-minded and lovely. The animals are part of what makes the place special: Mumu, Lily, Ruka, Artemisa, Mr. Ra, and Bagheera. Their presence is so sweet. Thanks to Viola, Dave, Dani, and all the volunteers for making La Ruka feel like my home away from home. I’m really grateful.

Being right between town and the beaches made the location ideal. I stayed at La ruka Hostel for almost two weeks and had a wonderful time. The staff, volunteers, and other guests brought such a welcoming energy, and I made a lot of great friends. I especially liked the yoga loft and street workout area, and the ice bath and sauna were perfect for cooling off. The kitchen was great too, and the bed was comfortable and cool. I’d gladly recommend La ruka, a solid 10/10. Thanks to everyone there for making the stay so memorable.

We slept so well at La Ruka. The rooms are roomy, the beds are comfy, and the top bunk ladders are the best we’ve come across. The garden is lovely, and there’s a big yoga area with free mats. The kitchen and dining area are great, and they put out free coffee in the morning. One of our favourite hostels, they do it really well.

It’s quiet after 10 pm, so La Ruka isn’t a party hostel, but it’s still very social. I was traveling solo and made tons of friends. The owner is the best, and he put on an amazing Christmas dinner for us. Everyone working there was kind and friendly. The private rooms were clean and comfortable, with a cute Pura Vida feel. There’s a beautiful garden, a well-equipped kitchen, and great common areas. The location between town and the main beaches is convenient, and bikes are available to rent for a good price. I loved staying here and would definitely come back. Thanks, La Ruka fam, for such a good time. I can’t wait to return! 🤗❤️

The balcony off the dorm, facing the garden, was a highlight, with a clean, comfortable hammock and plenty of clotheslines. There are also dorm beds with privacy curtains, rooms with or without AC, a choice of larger or standard Twin sized beds, and a clean outdoor tiled shower with warm water and a curtain if you don’t want to shower in a crowded dorm. La Ruka feels high-end for a very reasonable price, and you can see the care in the design and layout. It’s modern and clean, and the staff were friendly and helpful. I bought eggs from the hostel’s own chickens at a reasonable price. I could hear them in the morning but never saw where they grazed. The hostel is on the edge of town, about a 12 min walk to Cocles Beach. I saw an agouti in the garden and some lovely birds, though the wildlife wasn’t like what you get at places farther down the highway.
