Casa Hotel Mare Nostrvm

The grounds are full of wildlife. On our first day we saw a sloth moving through a nearby tree, and later spotted a big Jesus Christ lizard, toucans, poison dart frogs, fireflies in the evening, and toads gathering around the pool at night. The villa is beautiful, peaceful, and has a lovely view, in a spot between Quepos and Manuel Antonio. Carlos is a sweetheart and makes a generous breakfast with fruit, coffee, eggs, bread, and a mysterious but delicious coconut pastry. We enjoyed our stay more than any five star resort.

I loved Carlos, and the place too. It’s quirky, beautiful, authentic, and has a slightly apocalyptic feel in the coolest way. Breakfast was so special, and the setting was gorgeous. We just sat and enjoyed it. Casa Mare Nostrvm is Pura Vida!!!!!

Carlos was the best part of our first Costa Rica trip. He was funny, sarcastic, and really attentive. I still remember his breakfast: the best fruit I’ve ever tasted, with bananas, papaya, pineapple, and watermelon, plus toast, fresh eggs, coffee, and orange juice. We loved the beautiful rooms and their al fresco feel. The pool was a welcome break from the hot ocean, and the hotel sits far enough off the beaten path for nature sounds at night, while still being just outside both quepos and Manuel Antonio, away from the chaos. The room AC was a nice bonus. We stayed four nights in January and would happily return.

Carlos was lovely and helped us plan both our stay and our departure. The staff seemed genuinely committed to looking after guests. The location also struck a great balance: close to the main road for catching the local bus, but far enough away to keep nights quiet.
