Dinner was tasty, though the dining room felt a bit quiet on Christmas Day. We also loved being greeted by the dog on our way to breakfast. The lodge sits in a peaceful spot, with coffee plantations visible down in the valley, and sunrise from our room was lovely. Our room was spacious and clean, and the service was superb. Breakfast started with fresh fruit, then eggs and delicious coffee. My family and I stayed here last week and found everything exceptional. I’m sure the last post was about a different place.

We stopped at Chayote Lodge on the way to La Fortuna after landing at SJO around 6pm, and it worked out really well as a halfway point. The place is small and tucked into the hills, with spectacular views in daylight and after dark. Our room was spotless and nicely equipped, the staff were super friendly, and breakfast was very good. It didn’t disappoint, and I’d highly recommend it.

Even though we got in very late, the staff reopened the kitchen and made us hot soup, which was so kind. The following morning they arranged a wonderful yoga instructor. Our boutique-style room looked out over the coffee plantations, and the lodge itself is a peaceful, charming spot in the Costa Rican Highlands. Everyone we met was warm and clearly cared about making our stay special. I’d happily come back. Highly recommended.

The staff were very friendly, but I wouldn’t recommend the place. The cabins need a more thorough clean before guests arrive: our sheets were damp, the fridge was dirty, and there was a musty smell. The main window lock wouldn’t shut, and there were cobwebs on the restaurant chandeliers. Breakfast was very basic, just a small bowl of fruit with granola and yogurt. Eggs and typical “gallo pinto” cost extra.

We loved spending four days and three nights at Chayote Lodge during Easter Week 2025. The gardens and hiking trails were lovely, and we took easy day trips to the Chayote Reserve and Zarcero. At 5,000+ ft, the climate was perfect. Our bungalow was spacious and beautifully decorated, with stunning views of the mountains and Central Valley. The restaurant served fresh, delicious food with local and international choices. It’s a Costa Rican-owned boutique hotel, and the service felt warm and personal, with the owner serving us each day. We’ll definitely be back, and would recommend it to visitors from abroad as well as Costa Rica residents.
