Wyndham San Jose Herradura Hotel & Convention Center

The rooms are dated, but they have great amenities, and I barely spent time in mine. I booked at the last minute after the weather in the mountains turned horrible, and I'm glad I did. It was a wonderful two-night stay to finish my Costa Rica vacation, with a fabulous resort feel and lots of bars and restaurants. The service was excellent everywhere: front desk, bartenders, restaurant staff, and the airport shuttle driver were all amazing. I'd come back in a heartbeat.

The room flooded from a leak beneath the sink where maintenance had just been working. I slipped on the water while heading to the toilet and hit my ribs on the counter. I put the garbage can under the leak so the next guest wouldn't fall too. When I reported it, the front desk offered another room but showed no concern that I'd fallen or that it was still leaking. The assistant manager was less concerned than the bellman, who seemed more worried about me. I asked to speak with a manager, but was told I'd have to wait until the next day to talk to someone else. Nobody offered compensation or even asked if I was okay after the fall. For a hotel rated five stars, they didn't seem concerned about guests getting hurt in their rooms. One thing after another. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for obvious reasons. We had preordered a shuttle to collect us as soon as we got off the plane, but it never arrived. When I called, they said the next one would be in an hour, so I ordered an Uber instead. After checking into the room, we found there was no hot water. The front desk said maintenance would fix it while we went to get something to eat. By the time we returned, it had been fixed.

The staff were friendly, and the breakfast and restaurant food were good. Those were the only positives for me. Everything else was horrible. I wouldn't stay here again or recommend it to anyone. It wasn't even a cheaper option, since places in the area and in better areas were available for the same price or less. The photos on the website are misleading, mostly showing the nice lobby. The rooms and facilities were extremely dirty and old, and the whole place badly needs a deep clean and renovation. There were spider webs everywhere, the bathtub was filthy, the toilet kept running and needed several flushes to work, the air conditioning didn't work properly, and the water barely got hot. The rooms were completely outdated. Overall, it was a disgusting experience.

The view from our Tower room was really good, easily five stars. We stayed for two nights during Christmas week, and the service was very good too. Breakfast had an awesome spread, and the three pools were well maintained. You can pick up towels at reception. I'd give the room three stars because the mattress wasn't comfortable and the carpet needs replacing.
