We saw monkeys, anteaters, turkeys, and gorgeous hummingbirds right on the property, and the views from “The Nest” were stunning, even though we’re afraid of heights. It’s a secluded, eco-friendly stay for switching off, not a luxury resort. Getting in and out is tricky, and everything is far away, so I’d strongly recommend a rental car. We stayed in a newer lake view room. It was simple, with no TV or A/C. The sliding doors let in fresh air and give you the views, but nights could feel a bit stuffy. Breakfast is included and basic, with things like eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns. I loved the huevos rancheros, though I wish they came with potatoes or hashbrowns on the side. We skipped lunch and dinner because the prices seemed high, probably because the place is remote. The river trail is a tough hike and felt a little intimidating so deep in nature, but it was a unique, memorable experience.

The hiking day pass was worth it. The trails were very well managed, and the map was easy to follow. We had delicious lunch at the restaurant, where the volcano and lake views are perfect. The staff were friendly, and there’s a bird post outside with fruit. While eating, we watched toucans, finches, and other birds fly in.

The staff were attentive and good-natured throughout, and the guided walks were a highlight. I’d spend the money on both a bird walk and a night walk with the Observatory Lodge guides. Mine were skilled and made the experience what it should be. Nestor, Gabriel, and Edward were terrific, and we saw far more birds and wildlife with them. Birds are drawn to the watermelon slabs put out twice a day, which makes for great viewing. The lodge also has lovely gardens and jungle trails to explore. I love nature, especially birds, and the birding here did not disappoint. The rooms have nice hardwood details that suit a nature lodge, and the restaurant served food I’d be happy to get at a quality restaurant anywhere. The setting at the foot of the Arenal volcano is dramatic, and when the sky clears, the view is something to see. What a place. I wouldn’t hesitate to book.

We joined a night walk after enjoying the complimentary nature walk so much. We spotted frogs and pit vipers at night. During the day, our guide Edward was incredibly knowledgeable. On our own we barely saw more than birds, but he found creatures hidden all around, explained them, showed them through his scope, and even captured them on our phones. Wildlife is everywhere just steps from your room, in this lodge set right in the jungle. It’s the only lodge inside Arenal Volcano National Park. A few moments from an unforgettable experience.

The shared room was safe, clean, comfortable, and laid out wonderfully. The construction here is impressive, and everything is beautifully maintained. Staff were professional, courteous, and kind. We also enjoyed the jacuzzi, hanging bridges onsite, and the free tour. There are hiking trails, and the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They put fruit out for bird watchers, bringing lots of beautiful species to a spot where you can see them clearly. Getting here through tours and other services cost extra, but it was well worth it. A truly magical place and the highlight of our whole trip. A must visit and stay if you can.
