Dantica Cloud Forest Lodge

It was such a treat watching birds pass by from our room. We were thrilled to find it tucked into the woods away from the other rooms, with wall-to-wall glass looking out over a sweeping forest view. Mornings started early, especially for the Quetzal tour, but it was worth it. The food was great, if a little pricey, and the property has lovely walks along well-marked trails.

The location and views are amazing, and the staff are friendly. The rooms seem historic, so they’re a bit basic, though very large. The main issue for me was the poor hot water pressure. Most guests seem to come for the birds, especially the Quetzal. We paid for an early guided trip through the hotel and got a great sighting. Our guide knew a lot.

It’s cold up there, but the houses are nicely heated. From every room in our house, we had awesome mountain views. The hotel is at 2600 meters, which makes it a very special place. The restaurant serves good food, though service can vary. We enjoyed walks around the hotel’s grounds and farther out, and saw a huge variety of birds.

There’s a fair amount of walking up and down between the rooms, reception, and restaurant, so be ready for that. We loved the lodge. It’s a unique place for birdwatchers and nature lovers, and Carlos was the best of the many bird guides we had in Costa Rica. Ask for him if you want a guide: he’s very knowledgeable and a really nice guy. Top-notch!
