We ended up calling the place the “Favela Hotel” as a nickname. The plasterboard walls let every conversation and even whispers carry through, and one man was repeatedly threatening to hit his wife. There are probably better options around, though you may have to search for them.

The price felt high for this kind of hotel, especially given the area. The street is lined with bars popular with young people, and on the day I stayed there was a shootout outside. That had nothing to do with the hotel itself.

They've recently remodeled the place, and it's still so unusual and pretty. The restaurant is amazing too. I'd highly recommend it!
