We’ve stayed here several times while traveling around Costa Rica, and the staff have been great every visit. Everyone was warm and helpful, and they even kept a bag for us while we toured the country. Breakfast is delicious, and Marvin is especially attentive. The rooms were spacious and clean. Some can be noisier than others, particularly in this old building with its wooden floors, but it was easy enough to overlook, or bring earplugs. Walking in feels like coming home. San Jose can be a difficult city to love, and staying here really made our time there better.

The owner really helped us out when parking became a problem: he moved his own truck so we could use the gated space overnight. It felt like he was looking out for us, and that kind of generosity deserves recognition. The staff and owner also seem like they’d try to fix problems properly, which was a refreshing change from places that take advantage of tourists. The house dates to 1910 and apparently has historic status. Its original tiles and windows give it the feel of a colonial home, and the open courtyard is lovely. The owner mentioned a few projects they’re working on, which I expect will be finished soon. The wooden floors are charming, though noise could bother people in the early morning or on other floors. Staff seem mindful of that. Getting into the bathtub was tricky, and it could use something to help prevent slipping. I’d be glad to see what they’ve done here in the future.

The attendants were very nice, and they did help us get a room within 30 minutes when I arrived early. My Expedia booking showed noon check-in, though that didn’t match the hotel’s hours, so we avoided waiting another two hours. Still, we were given room 107, the same one mentioned in an earlier comment, and it looked unchanged from photos posted three months before. The problems hadn’t been fixed. The toilet kept running because its flush mechanism was faulty. They couldn’t move us after I showed them the earlier comment, but they let me use the bathroom in the neighboring room. The floor creaked loudly, so we could hear the room above, and late at night someone switched on the courtyard light, which shone into our room. It was an uncomfortable stay. Parking is about two blocks away. It might be okay for a very short visit, but given the condition of the room and bathroom, I wouldn’t return. The service and location were good.

I showed up on the wrong day because I’d made a booking mistake. The staff were incredibly kind about it, said they had rooms available, and let me stay for the original price. I really appreciated that. But the room they gave me, Room 107, was in awful shape. It was so humid that breathing felt difficult as soon as I walked in. There was mold on the bathroom walls and tiles, apparently painted over repeatedly instead of properly repaired. The floor between the bedroom and bathroom was filthy and damaged. I was shocked they would offer that room to guests. Other rooms I saw looked much better, so I think mine may have been the worst in the hotel. The staff were the only positive. Based on that room, I can’t recommend the hotel.

The food, coffee, and building were all amazing, and the people were kind and easygoing. Their compassion made the stress of traveling easier for me. As an autistic person, I felt they went above and beyond to help me feel safe and cared for. Special thanks to the manager, who picked me up in his own vehicle when we couldn’t get a shuttle. Five stars.
