Having dinner with Brenda and Abel’s staff, family, and neighbors was a real highlight of our Costa Rica trip. We had such a lovely time at their hacienda, with its beautiful surroundings and genuinely warm hospitality. If you want to meet local people, we’d definitely recommend staying here. It’s also a handy place to begin or finish a trip, about an hour from the airport.

Abel and Brenda found room for me and my children at the last minute, late at night, and we’re so grateful. The little rental house had everything we needed: a stove and plenty of cookware and dishes, a washer and dryer, comfortable beds, and a hot shower. Abel kept checking that we had what we needed. He even took us to the store, cut sugar cane for us, and opened coconuts. His kindness was unmatched. We loved the beautiful nature around the property and the horses. There are 11 horses, so I can’t remember which ones my kids liked best, but they also fell in love with Simba the dog. Brenda and Abel have made a lovely place for travelers. Our kind neighbor Pamela took these pictures :)

Brenda and Abel are so kind. Riding Lluvia was amazing, and the early morning sunrises brought such good energy. I also loved swimming and doing yoga with the kitties, Naranja and Nutmeg, on my mat. Wow, it was really great. I’m already planning another trip to Establo San Rafael for more healing energy.

The trails and hikes nearby were great, and there are lakes and waterfalls too. The place itself is absolutely stunning, with lovely horses and other animals. I really appreciate their philosophy around caring for the animals. When I volunteered in Costa Rica a couple of years ago, the whole family welcomed me so warmly and made me feel like one of them. I still think back on that experience with joy. A wonderful place I’d recommend to anyone. Don’t miss it!

Seeing Costa Rica’s back roads and trails on horseback was an experience we’ll always remember. My husband and I went on a wonderful trek organized by Establo San Rafael, with wonderfully trained, cooperative horses and great hosts. Our accommodations were comfortable, and we loved the varied experience: Parelli natural horsemanship, mountains, the ocean, a waterfall and river, an eco-farm, chocolate making, and more. We fell in love with Costa Rica and its people. If we get the chance to stay at Establo San Rafael and go on another trek someday, we’d do it again in a heartbeat.
